If you’ve been reading this blog for a few months, you know I’m in the market for a new SUV. An SUV with the most cargo space is a huge factor in what my wife finally decides to buy.

I don’t recall a time I’ve seen her Honda Pilot with an empty trunk – ever. She is constantly hauling stuff. Whether it’s a quick trip to Costco, going to the beach with the kids, or hauling stuff for the nonprofit she runs; there’s always something she needs to throw in the back of her pilot.

Matter of fact, when I wrote this post I peered in the trunk. There, I found 2 bags of clothes to be dropped off at Goodwill, my son’s catcher bag and two boxes of miscellaneous items left over from a charity event she did over the weekend.

The SUV With The Most Cargo Space

As the great rapper Sir Mix-A-Lot once said, “I like big trunks and I cannot lie” – or something like that. For my family an SUV with the most cargo space that is flexible enough to haul large amounts of stuff or just a small amount of stuff with extra passengers is a must-have when it comes to shopping for a new compact SUV.

Below I highlight the top 5 SUVs that can fit the most junk in their trunk.

Compact SUV Cargo Space

Honda CR-V

There are thousands of different cars to choose from and SUVs are a popular choice. Which one of them is the best SUV for the money, though? CRV voted safest suv for 2017 and one of the most fuel efficient suv

The Honda CR-V is one of the most popular American cars on the road. And it’s got some serious cargo room to boot. According to US News and World Report, “The redesigned 2017 CR-V has more cargo space than the outgoing model, whether you have the rear seats folded or in use. There’s 39.2 cubic feet of cargo room behind the rear seats and 75.8 cubic feet when they’re folded. The CR-V has more cargo room than almost every competitor.” That, my friends, puts the 2017 CR-V near the top of my list!

I haven’t written too much about the Equinox, although it is a top notch vehicle. Looking at the SUV, it almost looks like a Pilot, but not quite. It is still considered a compact SUV, it just looks bigger by the way it’s shaped. “The 2018 Chevy Equinox has 29.9 cubic feet of cargo space behind its second row and 63.5 cubic feet with the seats folded. The second row folds mostly flat, allowing for an open and usable cargo space. A power liftgate and a hands-free power liftgate are available.” What’s interesting here, is that the Equinox is slightly smaller with the behind the second row, but a little bigger with the second row folded down.

The Ford Escape is a great little compact with an appealing price tag. It’s also one of the closer competitors with the CR-V in terms of cargo space. “The Ford Escape has one of the higher maximum cargo capacities in the class (68 cubic feet compared to Honda’s 75.8 and the Mazda’s 59.6). With the rear seats up, you still get 34 cubic feet of room. There’s a low cargo floor, so it’s easy to load and unload heavy items. There’s a fair amount of small-item storage in the cabin, and a hands-free power liftgate is available.” U.S. News & World Report likes this SUV so much they ranked it at #4 for it’s class.

Up next is the Hyundai Tucson, a formidable competitor in its own regard. “The Tucson has 31 cubic feet of cargo space (just a smidge bigger than the CX-5) with its rear seats in use and 61.9 cubic feet with them folded (almost a full 1.5 cubic feet bigger than the CX-5).” This is considered an average size for this class of vehicle. The real features of this compact is the spacious cabin and a long list of features that make the Tucson a fun car to drive.

Mazda CX-5

The Mazda CX-5 is another top competitor in the world of compact SUVs. Known for its sleek lines and updated interior, the CX-5 is very nice to look at it. But how does it compare in terms of cargo space? “The Mazda CX-5 has 30.9 cubic feet of cargo space, which expands to 59.6 cubic feet when the second row of seats is folded. A 40/20/40 split-folding rear seat is standard, and a power rear liftgate is optional.” Wow, that’s big difference when compared to the CR-V (39.2 versus 30.9 and 75.8 versus 59.6). Let’s keep looking around…
