The Best of Seattle Music

That You Could Drive To

[All Day]

by Bill Flitter

After the passing of so many music legends in 2016, I was hoping we’d get a bit of a break this year. It is therefore doubly unfortunate that in 2017 we saw the passing of Chris Cornell, the iconic singer and songwriter who helped shape the voice and sounds of a generation. Seattle, Washington, will forever be known as the cradle of grunge rock with Cornell right there in the middle of it all. 2017 is also the 25th anniversary of the movie, Singles, whose soundtrack heavily featured Chris Cornell alongside Pearl Jam, Alice in Chains, Paul Westerberg, Screaming Trees, and The Smashing Pumpkins.

The anniversary reissue of the album includes seven bonus tracks by Cornell and Soundgarden. So, in honor of his memory, our love of cars, and Seattle music, here are three songs written by Chris Cornell. They each reference cars in addition to the seven bonus tracks (and the originals) on the reissue of the Singles soundtrack.

Chris Cornell’s Seattle Music

Seattle Music

I Am The Highway - Audioslave

I am not your rolling wheels,
I am the highway,
I am not your carpet ride,
I am the sky…

Getaway Car - Audioslave

Get yourself a car and drive it all alone,
Get yourself a car and ride it on the wind,
Get yourself a car and drive it all alone,
Get yourself a car and ride it on the wind…

Gasoline - Audioslave

No ‘what for’s, only a can
Of red says danger on it,
I have found another way,
Burning that gasoline…

7 More Songs of Seattle Music

Ok, so those songs reference cars, or the highway, or they mention gasoline (ok, so at least one of those songs was a stretch). At any rate, here now are the songs from the soundtrack Singles. Sadly not all of these songs are available on Spotify, but that will just give you an excuse to buy the whole album!

Seattle Music

Nowhere But You - Soundgarden

Nowhere but you,
I’m gone until I’m within you,
Nowhere but you,
There is no better place that I’ve been to…

Spoonman - Soundgarden

Feel the rhythm with your hands
(Steal the rhythm while you can)
Speak the rhythm on your own
(Speak the rhythm all alone) spoonman…

Flutter Girl - Chris Cornell

I’m drinking dust,
with eyes of rust,
tonight my tears might stain your wings,
so flutter home,
cause you’re better off alone,
than with me…

Did you know...

There is an actual sound garden in Seattle, WA. The massive pipe structures howl and whistle from the wind blowing through them, which is where the name comes from.

Missing - Soundgarden

Have you seen me?
Can you hear me?
Did you think you could win me over?
I’ve been hard to hold…

Birth Ritual - Soundgarden

Lying like needles
On forest earth.
Euphoric rush,
Trees bend to pray for us,
I’m sputtering
Like cold machines
Late for the birth ritual, ritual, ritual, ritual…

Ferry Boat #3 - Chris Cornell

Help me, I don’t know what I’m doing,
Help me before I fall to ruin,
And if I’m blind, I’ll save you all,
Come follow me to the bridge before the fall,
Help me, I don’t know what I’m doing…

Seasons - Chris Cornell

Summer nights and long warm days
Are stolen as the old moon falls,
And my mirror shows another face,
Another place to hide it all,
Another place to hide it all…

Over to You

In conclusion, this is a decent list of Chris Cornell’s music, but it barely scratches the surface of what he contributed over nearly four decades of making music. I also want to recommend giving his 2015 album, Higher Truth, a listen. It has a mature sound to it, which suggests Cornell spent the first 40 years of his life just warming up. Still, it’s nice to think he’s up there on his highway, in the sky. What’s your favorite Chris Cornell song?
