Fantastic Gifts For Dad
That He Will Actually Want
by Bill Flitter
Dads love their car gadgets and tailgating! They love the remote control, they love their phones and tablets. Basically, they love their electronics in general. Who doesn’t love a good tailgate as well? And, of course, they love their wife and kids too.
With Father’s Day around the corner, what kinds of gifts for dad can those loving kids and wives get for the gadget and sports enthusiast in their lives? Here’s a short list of ideas that dads around the world would truly appreciate.
Fun and Easy Car Gadget Gifts For Dad
A Portable Charger
Being a dad myself, I was all set to personally recommend the Super Powered Charging Lantern from Restoration Hardware, but it is no longer available through their site, which is a shame. However, you might be able to find one on Amazon (or something similar) and it just might be worth it.
This isn’t just any portable charger. It has a pop-up light that can be used as either a flashlight or a mini lantern. Plus, it has a thin wire loop so you can hang it inside a tent or attach it to your backpack with a carabiner. Simply charge it up the night before your road trip and you’ll have enough power to charge your phone, tablet, MP3 player, or what have you.
The charger will fill the battery meter from drained to full in a couple hours. The lantern provides a soft glow so you can easily see your phone and cable in the dark. I usually plug mine in right before going to bed, and then unplug it a few hours later as I’m tossing and turning in my sleeping bag wondering why I still haven’t bought a thick air mattress.
A Tire Gauge
When I was a kid, a tire gauge was an aluminum tube with a plastic measuring stick inside. When you placed one end of the gauge over the valve of the tire, the air pressure would push the plastic stick out, and from that you could gauge your tire’s air pressure. Things have changed a lot since then, and now tire gauges are one more electronic gadget that any car-driving Dad would appreciate.
The AstroAI Digital Tire Pressure Gauge is currently on sale at Amazon for less than $10 (prices vary with the weather at Amazon, so that price will likely change soon). This electric gauge will measure tire pressure in less than a second and has an easy-to-read backlit LCD display.
A Car Mount
Help your Dad be safe on the road by giving him a car mount for his phone. Using your phone hands-free while in the car is not only a safety issue, it’s the law. Car mounts come in many shapes and sizes and work in a variety of ways. I’ve been using a car mount that clips into the air vents in my Honda Accord. It never falls out and holds my phone securely even as I jab at it while stopped at a red light.
Plus, mounted in front of my Accord’s air-vent, the phone is just below eye level and just to the side of my direct vision, so a quick glance is all I need when I see a call coming in or I want to check the GPS. However, when I’ve tried to use the air-vent phone mount in my wife’s Honda Civic or my friend’s Chevy pick up, the vibrations from driving bounce it right out of the vent. It’s hit or miss as to when it wants to behave.
I recommend staying away from car mounts with suction cups. They never last, and will eventually pop right off your windshield. Magnetic car mounts appear to be very popular these days, and theit thin magnetic plates will not mess with your phone; however, there’s a possibility it will hinder wireless charging.
Perfect Tailgating Gifts For Dad
The Slot Dog
Yep, you read that right. There’s a product called, Slot Dog, and it’s a device you’ve probably never seen before. Hot dogs and baseball go hand-in-hand, so there’s a good chance you’ll be putting hot dogs on your portable grill. Everyone from Grandpa to little kids enjoys a hot dog, so why not make those hot dogs extra special?
With the Slot Dog, you can cut grooves into the hot dog. So as it cooks, the cuts expand, allowing the edges to crisp up for extra flavor. All of your toppings will ooze into the slots so they don’t drip off the end of the dog as you take a bite. Are you salivating yet?
Traditionalists have been doing something similar to their hot dogs for years. They cut an X shape at both ends of the dog or sausage so they split open and get a little crispy on the edges. The Slot Dog takes that concept and raises it to the next level. You can pick up your Slot Dog on Amazon for under $20.
The Coolest Cooler
When you think of a tailgate party, one of the first things you think of is the drinks. Cold beers are usually at the top of any tailgater’s list. But what about those who prefer a fruity, frozen drink? Well, the Coolest Cooler has you covered—with a built in blender and a long list of premium features.
This is not your budget cooler, you can buy a red Coolest Cooler for around $450. On the other end of the spectrum, you can get a basic Coleman cooler for $25, but all it will do is keep your ice from melting. Sometimes all you need is something to keep your beer cold though.
Click below to check out some of the coolest features!
- Battery-Powered Ice-Crushing Blender
- Removable Outdoor Bluetooth Speaker
- Waterproof USB Charger
- LED Light to find your favorite beverage after dark
- Built-in Bottle Opener with Magnetic Cap Catcher
- 4 Built-in Plates, a Ceramic Knife, Corkscrew, Removable Divider/Cutting Board
- Tie Down Bungee Cord
- Stainless Steel Axle and Hinges, Double-wide Rubberized Wheels, and Aluminum Telescoping Handle
A Portable Grill
You can’t have a real tailgate party without grilling something. Sure, you’ll have your chips and potato salad, but the highlight will always be the hot, sizzling meat coming off the grill. So it’s no wonder that the most well-recognized piece of tailgating equipment you’ll find is the Weber Smokey Joe 14” portable grill. You can pick one up at Target for $30. Cheap. Dependable. Long-lasting.
However, using a Smokey Joe, you’ll be hauling charcoal and that could get messy in the back of your car or truck. Definitely place it inside a a large trash bag before heading to the game.
To beat a classic like is tough. But if you don’t want to mess with charcoal, there’s plenty of options for portable gas grills. You might want to check out the Coleman Road Trip Propane Portable Grill. You can get one on Amazon for around $150, depending on the current sale price. The best part about the Coleman Road Trip Grill is that it folds up neatly and has two wheels and a handle for convenient traveling.
