The Best Car Dealer Tactics That Will Cost You The Most Money
A Series of Occasional "Vents" About The Car Buying Process

“LIARS! THEY ALL LIE, ALL THE TIME, ALL OF THEM!”
I recently overheard that in a conversation about car dealer tactics.
Not all dealers lie. I have come across many honest, morally upstanding car dealers.
Like everyone, they have to make a living. They compete with, not just other brands, but also with other dealers selling the same or similar vehicles. Competition can be cutthroat and, unfortunately, so can selling practices.
Hi, I'm Vinny and this is Vinny Vents...
I’m one of Carjojo’s Certified Negotiation Experts.
Certified Negotiation Experts represent, you, the car buyer who doesn’t have the time, patience, or other inclination to meet dealers on an uneven playing field. That’s what keeps me going.
Using our data-driven science we literally cut through those deceptions so we can assess what any vehicle’s lowest price ought to be.
Deceptive Car Dealer Tactics That Cost You
Car dealers are not bad people. But, I must admit, I’ve seen dealerships that have used bait-and-switch and other typical car dealer tactics that are unfair to customers.
The way new cars are sold in this country is, by nature, a flawed system.
Most car-buyers worry about being ripped off, and with good reason. Those who are equipped to negotiate and who have a grasp of what a good price is usually get better deals. People who are not so equipped tend to overpay. The deck seems stacked because it is, especially against people who are less in the know. It favors car dealer tactics, particularly those who use deception and other less-than-scrupulous methods to attract customers.
That’s why Carjojo was created—to provide the insights and data car buyers need to restack the deck in their favor.
A One In A Million Deal Only One In A Million Would Qualify For
As one recent example of deceptive car dealer tactics, a number of Carjojo customers have wanted to purchase the 2017 Hyundai Elantra due to its amazing advertised price.
A dealer website listed the Elantra for $14,500: “Come Buy Today,” said the site verbatim. Yes, that is an incredible price!
Who, in the market for a brand new 2017 Elantra, wouldn’t jump at the chance to buy one for under $15,000?
But there was a catch. A HUGE catch.
That advertised price was deceptive. To get that price, a buyer has to qualify for ALL of the rebates Hyundai offers, including the following:
- Uber driver
- Retired or current military
- Recent college grad
- Current Hyundai owner
Plus, of course, the buyer has to finance the purchase with Hyundai.
That’s quite a list! My guess is a very small percentage of people qualify for every single rebate and, therefore, no one could buy that car at that price. So why would the dealer post it at that price if no one could quality for it?
Confessions of a Car Sales Rep
I posed that question to a sales rep at a Hyundai dealership, who was particularly forthright:
