Iconic Cars From 80s Christmas Movies

There are some classic cars from 80s Christmas movies.  Although this movie is not from the 80’s, if you ask my kids what Dad’s favorite Christmas movie car is they would say the Ferrari 550 Maranello in the Family Man. My wife debates me on the fact that she doesn’t think the Family Man is a holiday movie. Don’t tell her, but I think she’s wrong! It’s a classic Christmas movie. Matter-of-fact, my daughter and I have a tradition of watching it the morning of Christmas eve.

Here now is a list of the best cars from 80s Christmas movies (with one exception).

Family Man Movie Car 80s Christmas Movies

Nicholas Cage drove (and actually owned) the Ferrari 550 Maranello in the 2000 movie, Family Man.

1. Parker’s 1937 Oldsmobile Six in “A Christmas Story” (1983)

Old Man Parker’s 1937 Oldsmobile Six in “A Christmas Story” (1983)

MSRP in 1937: $895

For some reason, I always thought A Christmas Story was originally released back in the 1940s or so. Everyone kept referring to it as a classic and from what little I saw, it looked like it took place in the ‘40s. So it came as a big surprise when I learned the film was actually released in 1983. Now, in 2017, the film is 34 years old, if you can imagine that! One of the great scenes in the movie is watching the family go out and chop down their own Christmas tree, and strap it to the roof of the car. Can you guess what type of car it was? According to IMDb, the Parker’s Oldsmobile is a 1937 Model 6, four-door sedan with Indiana license plate 56 498.

2. Clark W. Griswold’s Family Truckster in “Christmas Vacation” (1989)

Clark's Car Then...

Christmas Movie Cars

MSRP in 1979: $7,000

You know a car is famous when you can order a t-shirt featuring the car. And that’s exactly what you can do with the Family Truckster from Christmas Vacation. Who can ever forget a car with avocado metallic green paint, wood-paneling and an extra set of headlights? While the car was specifically made for the movie, it was based on a 1979 Ford LTD Country Squire station wagon.

3. George Bailey’s 1919 Dodge Brothers touring car in “It’s A Wonderful Life” (1946)

Bailey's Car Then...

Christmas Movie Cars

MSRP in 1919: $785

It’s A Wonderful Life is the one exception to this list of cool Christmas movie cars made in the ‘80s. It’s hard not to write a top five list of holiday movies and not include this true classic. In the movie, Jimmy Stewart drives a 1919 Dodge Brothers Touring Car, which was recently completely restored. According to The Daily Mail, the car was driven 5.5 miles through the streets of Pasadena in California during the Rose Parade on January 1, 2017.

4. Ghost of Christmas Past’s 1970s Checker taxi cab in “Scrooged”(1988)

Ghost's Car Then...

Classic Christmas Movie Cars

MSRP in 1970: Unknown

I very distinctly remember when Scrooged came out in 1988 but I don’t think I ever saw it. From what I understand, the movie stars Bill Murray (one of my favorites!) and he’s taken for the ride of his life, literally, in the back of an old 1970s checkered cab driven by the Ghost of Christmas past. It is an epic scene that takes them on a wild ride through the streets of New York and eventually transports them back to 1955. Maybe it’s time I check that movie out?

5. Martin Riggs’ 1985 GMC C-3500 Crew Cab Wideside Dually in “Lethal Weapon” (1987)

Rigg's Car Then...

Classic Christmas Movie Cars

MSRP in 1985: ~$12,000

Lethal Weapon is definitely a movie I’ve seen before, several times over. It’s from a time when Mel Gibson was still cool. But I never thought it should be included on a list of 80s Christmas movies…maybe because of all the violence. The soundtrack should have reminded me what time of year it was though, as songs include Silent Night, the First Noel and a bunch of other Christmas classics (I bet you don’t remember that!). Anyway, for each iteration of the movie, Riggs drives the current version of the GMC C3500 Crew Cab Wideside with those huge wheels in the back. You won’t miss that one coming down the road!

Over to You

Which of these cars or 80s Christmas movies are your favorites? I bet you could list a few of your own favorite cars from Christmas movies as well. If I could include cars from Thanksgiving movies, I’d definitely include Planes, Trains & Automobiles. I love the scenes of Steve Martin and John Candy cruising down the highway in a completely burned up car and getting pulled over? Hilarious!
