Are You Confident In
Your 2017 Toyota 4Runner Reliability?
by Bill Flitter
My family is currently on a quest to purchase a new, large sized SUV. Something rugged, yet luxurious. Maybe something big enough to haul a boat, yet simple enough to unload groceries. Also, it needs to be nearly maintenance free, besides oil changes and new tires after time. So, I started researching what are the common maintenance issues the 2017 Toyota 4Runner has and 4Runners in general. Furthermore, I wanted to know any maintenance issues people are reporting. This is what I found while looking into the 2017 Toyota 4Runner reliability.
What I found was a little surprising. Actually, my first search result landed me on a page with a very long list of items that will need maintenance for a Toyota 4Runner. When I did similar research for Honda Pilot reliability, I did not find anything similar. Granted, the site is run by a Toyota mechanic who is advertising his services, but still, this is worth a look.
Maintenance And Care To Improve The 2017 Toyota 4Runner Reliability
Yearly Maintenance Costs
My mind immediately started to wonder about costs. What are people having fixed that would cost them hundreds of dollars a year. This is a concern for families on a budget. Costly repairs are a pain, especially right after purchasing a vehicle that starts at $35,000.

At first glance that appears to be a long list of issues. However, it’s really just a list of all the common maintenance items. These items should be reviewed as part of a standard maintenance program. I still wanted more information on Toyota’s maintenance plan, though.

ToyotaCare is exactly what it sounds like. It’s Toyota’s version of their maintenance plan. Their recommended services include the following.
- Replacing engine oil and oil filter

- Inspect and adjust all fluid levels
That sounds pretty nice for the first two years. What if you plan on driving your 4Runner for 20 years and 250,000 miles, though? That’s when I discovered repairpal.com.
If you visit repairpal.com, you will find a list of 46 known problems with the Toyota 4Runner.
Much of the list consists of “Check Engine Light” type of issues, but there seem to be a lot of them. Plus, as you scroll down the list, you start to see things like Keyless Entry stopped working. Can you imagine stuck in a parking lot and not being able to enter your own SUV? The Automatic Transmission may also overheat. It’s kind of a scary site to look through.
After finding so many maintenance issues with the Toyota 4Runner, I had to check out their overall safety rating. In fact, according to a couple of different sites, they rate in the 4 to 5 star range with good overall scores.
So, I don’t believe the 2017 Toyota 4Runner reliability is a complete mess as those other sites imply, I’m sure it’s a great vehicle and I know people who love theirs. But, when I researched Honda, I did not find the same results.
